Reflections on Making - Theaster Gates
Together the gallery artists, makers and designers in this exhibition share stories; not only through the act of making but also with a deep understanding of material that resonates with undeniable beauty. They are an expression of shared humanity, cultural heritage and a primordial connection to the natural world.
They demonstrate togetherness, with an emotional connection to place, a sense of shared purpose and courage to explore, through skilled making processes, innovative artistic expressions.
When one considers that “craft” is often cast aside as banal and irrelevant in contemporary art discourse, this exhibition allows audiences to reevaluate such restricted terminologies and open up a discussion around material intelligence, and the cultural history of making through iconic artworks and design pieces.
Together in our new home in central Mayfair - a splendid, recently renovated Victorian Schoolhouse - we consider The Crafted Arts movement to pursue an authentic voice in the visual arts to create a clearly defined and richer cultural landscape. As Theaster Gates affirms, “Without the pursuit of making, I would have no purpose, and for that reason, I am honoured to be a maker waking in the morning, ready for the administration of my calling and the tasks that befall me.”
