Description
Sprouted Table is meticulously carved from Oregon walnut. The wood stems from a piece milled unusually thick during the 1970s. Following this, the material was air dried for decades in a barn. Julian’s approach to shaping the table was guided by the cracks and imperfections embedded in the material. He used a chainsaw and grinders to achieve the loose form before sanding, contrasting with the delicate carvings emerging from the surface. The table top is covered in holes, out of which sprout the sixteen forms. To make the carvings, the artist began by using a lathe to turn dowel ends on each, matching the holes on the table top, so the carvings can be arranged in different orientations. The shapes come from drawings the artist transferred directly onto the wood. He then cut them out with a bandsaw and began carving, using everything from power tools to traditional carving gouges and knives, to homemade sanding mechanisms. To achieve the intricate, crisp, and hypersmooth shapes, a specific combination of careful handcarving with tiny, sharp blades and an intense dedication to hand sanding then follows. There are no computers, digital modeling, or CNC used in the process.
