Christian Burchard : A Man in Motion

Steve Loar, American Woodturner, June 1, 2023
Christian Burchard has been a man in motion for most of his life. His story reads like a travelogue; he graduated from high school and immediately helped crew a ship to Australia, where he became a jackaroo (cowboy) and a seismic explorer for a mining company. Along with a friend, he then trekked through Southeast Asia, through the heart of Europe, and, eventually, home to Germany. Here he committed to a two year classic European apprenticeship that called for an entire year of using only hand tools. Interests in tai chi made for a continental leap to Colorado, USA, and then east to The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), with a focus on sculpture.
