Part of Brompton Design District’s The Practice of Learning programme curated by Jane Withers Studio, the sculptural works exhibited in Engrained: Material Intelligence showcase the innate properties of wood, drawing out its enduring significance and emotional durability in contemporary design. The exhibition address is 15a Cromwell Place, South Kensington, London, SW7 2LA.
The Gallery delves into the profound relationship between wood and craftsmanship, exhibiting works by Full Grown, Nic Webb, Peter Marigold, Gareth Neal, Kaspar Hamacher, Max Bainbridge, Jim Partridge, and Liz Walmsley. Each artist highlights a unique aspect of wood's character and potential. Nic Webb’s 'co-design' process lets the timber guide his creations, Gareth Neal carefully repurposes the offcuts of oak heartwood typically discarded and Peter Marigold experiments with cedar and steel nails to create unique patinas. Kaspar Hamacher sculpts sweeping wooden forms, and Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley focus on timber's natural grain to craft monumental furniture.Max Bainbridge reflects on ash dieback by hollowing out a tree’s bark to reveal its inner vulnerability, encasing a stone from its roots in pewter. Full Grown, the botanical design-duo, shapes trees into furniture as they grow, merging nature with contemporary design. -
