Sarah Myerscough Gallery is delighted to present Accoutrements & Illuminations, a solo exhibition by visual artist Frances Pinnock. Opening on 10 October 2025, the exhibition forms part of the inaugural programme celebrating the gallery’s relocation to a magnificent three-storey Victorian schoolhouse in the heart of Mayfair.
Pinnock’s intricate leather and mixed media sculptures function as vignettes: each piece a distilled dreamscape, shaped by narrative, memory, and the rhythm of recurring thought. Her sculptures are worlds unto themselves. They recall the bespoke techniques of garment, puppet, and shoemaking, adorned with curious attachments that orbit, hang, pierce, or rest upon the forms, charging their presence as suggestive, uncanny characters.
These accoutrements and illuminations act as amulets and coded symbols. Some are made through a myriad of crafted techniques: a stained-glass house, a brass ladder, parchment and horsehair limbs, a transparent vellum window. Others emerge through serendipitous encounters: second-hand discoveries, or fragments originally intended as placeholders, now permanently absorbed into the sculptural fabric.
Developed over three years, from Spring 2022 to Spring 2025, the works draw on a constellation of recurring memories and affective states that surfaced during the act of making. They are diaristic though remain ambiguous - each piece offering a glimpse into a deeply interior world. Reflecting on reverie and the strange choreographies of everyday life, titles such as Dress for the job you want (Accoutrements & Illuminations) and Thought Loop (Lux & Lumens) serve as poetic markers of the artist’s themes.
Pinnock’s sculptures feel inhabited. Not in a literal sense, but through a charged presence that speaks to interiority, ritual, and time. These works become intimate offerings: containments for an emotive and atmospheric strangehood.
