This piece is all hand carved from linden wood; constructed, glued together and carved again. This whole work has been quite labor intensive...
The finish is burnished graphite. 3 coats of laborious hand burnishing with a graphite stick— so the graphite is almost another material pushed into the fibers of the wood. The result is very mysterious and almost immaterial. The final coat is a clear spray lacquer so it won’t come off on hands or clothes.
The entire piece comes apart and assembles with no need for tools— it is all very precise hand compression fit— with each element clearly numbered on the shoulder of each joint. You should have no problem assembling it.
The whole thing should fit in a relatively small box! I will be sending it air to London next week.
I’m very pleased with the piece. It is a bit of a breakthrough departure from a vocabulary I’ve been working with for years. I’m excited and invigorated by the new language, although it feels near and dear at the same time. I hope you like it— and it’s not too far off from what you were expecting.
