I am a chain maker and whilst chain is what I make it is also the subject of my work. Chain is to add strength and flexibility to a material, I use this as a way to explore materiality and material relationships. As well as making jewellery collections I also make sculpture. Recent award Jerwood Makers Open 2019 allowed me to take my sculptural work into a new and ambitious scale. Chain is currently on display at 2021 Visual Arts Centre until 2nd January 2021. Four Is A Square. Thinking about growth in two dimensions I have used four links within a link to create a chainmail square. There is an immediacy within the making of this work by using copper tube, a readily available material, I can be playful within the making process. Through my own tool development I bend the tube into links on a draw bench in a repetitive process. Made to be handled and played with so that the shape is ever changing this piece can be seen in infinite ways. Like cloud gazing, looking at the piles of chain I can see many imagined creatures animals and mythical monsters.
