These everyday objects placed on a plinth have been central to Julian’s artistic practice. Hand-thrown by Julian in specially prepared and coloured clays, these everyday objects are at once so familiar and fundamental to our daily lives, functional and symbolic of sustenance and meeting friends. The idea grew out of, amongst other things, a visit to Paris and the reconstruction of Brancusi’s studio at the Pompidou Centre. Julian was struck how Brancusi’s sculpture, such as Oiseau, incorporated a base which was a a proportionally considered part of the composition. Julian calls these bases / plinths “grounds”. Placed on a wall these objects have an architectural sensibility and create a powerful definition of space.
