Description
The furniture stems in many ways from a commission in 2019-2020 for a Baptismal Font, Altar and Reliquary for St Augustine’s RC Church. The Font was very much an evolution of Julian’s monumental thrown forms, previously seen in the solo national touring exhibition ‘Quietus’ (2012-16). The priest at St Augustine’s had seen ‘Quietus’ and was particularly struck by the Monumental Jars, he approached Julian to make a Font. As discussions progressed the commission broadened to include the making of an Altar, site of the central sacrament of the Church but also a potent metaphor for one of the most essential social interactions, the supper table and its rituals. The commission for the Altar also included a Reliquary, which Julian sealed within the Altar during the Blessing of the Altar service led by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster.Join our mailing list
