Charles Trevelyan is an internationally acclaimed designer and sculptor whose practice has received widespread global recognition through major solo exhibitions, including Vignettes (London, 2024), Fuse (New York, 2018), Aspects (London, 2017), and Between The Lines (Paris, 2013) at Carpenter's Workshop. Trevelyan’s works have been presented at premier international art and design fairs—including TEFAF Maastricht, Design Miami/Basel, PAD London, Design Days Dubai, and the India Art Fair—and featured in landmark group presentations such as Dysfunctional at Carpenters Workshop Gallery Venice (2019) and DesignMart at the Design Museum in London (2006). In addition to leading Studio Trevelyan, his broader career encompasses commercial design leadership as co-director of the industrial design studio Viable (2005–2014) and high-profile fine art fabrication, having sculpted major works for artist Yinka Shonibare CBE shown at venues including Central Park, New York.
Born in Australia in 1974, Trevelyan transitioned into collectible design following his background in first-class honors materials engineering and 3D design. He has established a rigorous, research-led practice that bridges scientific methodology with sculptural art. Rather than creating direct imitations of nature, his process utilises generative systems—integrating a hybrid of manual techniques and digital technologies—to provoke the psychological and tactile responses experienced when encountering organic phenomena. Drawing on diverse influences ranging from electron microscopy and crystalline morphology to agricultural satellite imagery, Trevelyan manipulates material parameters, sound waveforms, 3D printing, scanning, and custom optical distortions.
By layering, distorting, and digitally extrapolating geometric patterns, he crafts textured, complex branching structures and faceted sculptural works. His practice creates a seamless dialogue between mathematical precision, generative process, and organic form. -
