"This new series of three paper sculptures consider the cultural significance of certain materials and making processes, scroll or book-like structures and the embedding of glyphic gestures in material forms. The pieces draw from a 2019 visit to Sicily – a journey that would not, in 2020, currently be possible to do – and the Italian tradition of illusory paint effects that emulate the markings that run through slabs of polished stone. In these interior decorations the distinctive visual qualities of rock are recreated via the expressive lens of human interpretation, in which colours become joyfully enhanced and veins and patterns lyrically applied: stone recalled from memory. The markings in these works were likewise drawn from memories of that visit, an action that feels particularly pertinent in a time of lockdown and distance." - Alida Kuzemczak-Sayer
