Leading Ladies is a celebration of the increasing influence of female contemporary artists. In the UK as a whole, female artists (and dealers) have become ever more prevalent in recent years. Many more promising artists are now able to follow their chosen career and the rise of the YBAs has put successful and confident female artists firmly in the public eye, with both Rachel Whiteread and Tracey Emin representing Britain at the Venice Biennale. With approximately 50% of graduating art students now female, a new generation of artists is causing a long-awaited shift in the art world.
This exhibition contains an eclectic mix of work by many gallery artists, and also introduces the work of Linda Lieberman, Harriet Mena Hill, and Helena Ben-Zenou. In holding an all-female exhibition, we can consider to what extent gender influences art - whether it is a dominant factor, or just one of a variety of both personal and outside elements that have shaped artists and informed their work.
