Gallery Artists

Sarah Myerscough Fine Art is the only UK gallery to specialise in promoting international turned and carved wood artists mainly from America and Europe. All the exhibiting artists have been selected for their fine craftsmanship, international status and innovative approach to the material. Year on year we continue to develop the Turned Wood collection in the gallery and through extensive research we keep our collection fresh, unique and inventive.

Emma Crighton-Miller, previously of the Financial Times, wrote regarding a recent turned wood exhibition by the gallery, "Displayed not in the intimacy of a domestic interior but in the unforgiving surroundings of a contemporary gallery, still these pieces caught and held their audience, like the most compelling contemporary sculpture. Dramatic, mysterious, rough hewn or exquisitely polished, they transcended the brute facts of their highly-skilled making to speak of life and death, time and transformation, art and nature, accident and perfection. Then the challenge was to prove that turned wood could hold its own in aesthetic value against the many other examples of fine art Myerscough regularly shows"

Turned Wood in this country was generally associated with salad bowls and spindles and certainly a little known aspect of the contemporary London craft world, with little history in terms of Fine Craft, secondary market sales or museum interest. The 'craft', simply existing in ad hoc small fairs thoughout the country, with only a handful of makers even attempting to make work that could be exhibited alongside contemporary ceramic or glass, or considered as interesting or significant. Through the gallery's initiative of importing internationally established makers in this specialist field, of such exceptional skill and creative innovation, we introduced something to the market that was completely new and compelling. At the first COLLECT art fair the work was hugely admired and stood head held high alongside other international artists working at the top of their respective fields. Through our continued efforts to elevate the status of this little known but historically significant craft, over the past six years we now have extensive museum interest with recent acquisitions by the V&A and Fitzwilliam Museum and major private collections .

The gallery has just had it's ten year anniversary and we have historically had a great interest in leveling the playing field between Fine Art and Craft, seeking at times to challenge Fine Art's elevated status. In both artistic fields, we endeavour to show work which is of conceptual interest, and which has technical excellence and beautiful craftsmanship.

Our thanks to Brian and Hana Smouha for making the Turned Wood project possible
