Moulthrop studied Law and after a career in Construction decided to follow his father, Ed Moulthrop's footsteps and became a turned wood artist. It was his father and the first generation turners in the US that left a rich inheritance of innovative design and technical expertise, which helped develop the more personal languages of the intermixed styles of today's American wood turner. This is true of Philip's signature vessel form, entitled 'Bundled Mosaic'. Famous for his pioneering composite technique used in these vessels, they are exquisitely patterned and rich in colour and texture. The ends of wood are bundled together and suspended in resin then turned on the lathe. The viewer is beguiled by the process and stunning surface qualities achieved through Moulthrop's idiosyncratic process. Today Moulthrop is a leading International wood artist and his work is included in The American Craft Museum, New York; Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; The Olympic Museum, Switzerland; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington; Museum of Arts and Design, New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; and The White House Collection of American Craft, Washington.
