Maryrose Watson, an exquisite weaver and textiles artist, graduating from her Textiles MA with distinction at Chelsea School of Art in 2010, having already established herself in the textiles field by producing complex and highly polished wall pieces.
The artist has an interest for observing geometry and symmetry within urban landscapes, with particular interest in linear elements of architectural structures. Moving away from the restrictions of cloth as a functional product,Watson experiments with wrapping, overlapping and intersecting layers of yarn directly around wooden frames. By following a precise, almost mathematical formula, three-dimensional forms emerge which create a constantly changing visual experience, facilitated by the effect of light upon the work. The artist hand-dyes her own yarns allowing for controlled palettes and fine-tuned colour combinations to create resonance and contrast within the piece. While challenging established concepts of weave, by laying both warp and weft at the same time, Watson's work also draws inspiration from traditional craft practice of dyeing and weaving, allowing the history of this medium to resonate within her oeuvre.
