John Hoyland RA sadly passed away after a long illness on Sunday 31st July 2011.
A good friend and loyal supporter of the gallery, John Hoyland will be sadly missed. Mentor and friend of 20 years to our own gallery artist, Andy Stewart, he was immensely generous with his time, his writing and his willingness to exhibit side by side with Andy and other younger artists that he believed in and wished to support.
Mel Gooding wrote in his obituary that “nothing was lost and nowhere was alien to this most complete of artists”. This is a fitting testament to a courageous, uncompromising painter and was echoed in his writings and his approach to life. He was an acute observer and commentator of contemporary society and a true force of nature that will be missed in the art world. John was never afraid to live life; a complete artist, a complete man.
We send our deepest condolences to his wife Beverley, son Jeremy, and his immediate family.
